WHO we are

Since our inception in 1943, the Birmingham Committee on Foreign Relations has been the leading international study group in Alabama. Our committee prides itself on the intellectual content of our meetings, the caliber of our speakers, and the knowledge and diversity of our members.

Historically, we have convened monthly from September through May to hear from foreign policy experts on a variety of timely topics. Our events generally include a cocktail hour followed by dinner. Lectures last about 30 minutes and are followed by ample time for questions from our guests.

The BCFR is a members-based, dues paying non-profit. Spouses and guests are always welcome to attend BCFR events.

Our committee is non-political. We do not take sides or advocate any policy or position as a group. Both our members and our guest speakers range the full spectrum of political thought from ultra conservative to ultra liberal. We view our monthly discussions as a time to learn, exchange ideas, recognize free speech, and enjoy fellowship and conviviality.

We are affiliated with the American Committees on Foreign Relations (ACFR) in Washington, D.C. Many of our members attend the national conference in Washington, D.C., which is held annually around April/May. Membership in the Birmingham Committee carries with it automatic membership in ACFR.
